In December of 1995 Jane Petrillo, who is currently at Colby-Sawyer in New Hampshire, received a McConnell Foundation grant to work with the citizens of Barton on a Visual Analysis of the village. It was at that same time that she called me and asked me to participate in the project. We hired Cheryl McGlosky, a UVM Environmental Studies major, over the semester break to help with background research on availability of materials for the project. Over the course of the spring semester and into the summer Scott Frasier, also an Environmental Studies student, gathered together the historical information and together with Katya and myself created the History Board. Katya Podsiadlo and Adam Hubbard, both AmeriCorps Members, came to us through Fred Schmidt and the Center for Rural Studies at the University of Vermont. Adam's background is in Geography and Katya's is in Environmental Studies. They were invaluable in terms of getting the work done over the course of the summer. They worked on all aspects of the project from research and writing drafts of the manual to putting together the final presentation boards.

This visual analysis would not have been possible without the help of the McConnell Foundation, numerous active citizens of Barton, and the work of Cheryl, Scott, Adam and Katya. It has been a pleasure working on this project with everyone.
