PART III: RECOMMENDATIONS

The architecture and layout of buildings in the village of Barton create a sense of history and order, yet display a quality of individualism which is characteristic of Vermont towns; however, Barton has a uniqueness and quality which separate it from other villages. Its singular history, exceptional natural resources, and infrastructure lend themselves to creating a unique and pleasant town in which to live and visit. It is our intent to maintain these qualities which have been integral to the formation of Barton, while suggesting possibilities which will address the aesthetic quality, economic and ecological stability, safety, and human activity of the village.

While the conceptual recommendations made are meant to speak to the dynamics of the whole town, four areas have been identified as target zones for discussion. These zones were chosen because of their historical uses, the identified needs of local committees, and the impact and meaning each of these target zones has to the whole of Barton Village. The first target zone is called "Gateways" and is comprised of the three major roads that access Barton Village: Route #5 along Crystal Lake, Route #5 north of the village center, and Route #16 east of the village. The second target zone is the Crystal Lake outlet area. The Brick Kingdom is the third area that we focused on and the last target zone is the Village Green and its surrounding buildings. Our recommendations focus on each of these zones connecting the Gateways and the Crystal Lake outlet to the Brick Kingdom and the Village Green. Contiguous aspects of the recommendations will be described first in order to provide a context for each target zone.
