The Limited Income Nutrition Education Program (LINEP) is funded federally by the EFNEP, state controlled, and locally delivered by about 46 people to 800 people state-wide. The LINEP is a program that expands the EFNEP to include clients who are receiving state distributed food stamps awarded by the Federal Food and Nutrition Service and parents of young children. The LINEP collaborates with Area Agencies on Aging and the State Food Stamp Program to provide education about nutrition for people with limited incomes. A system that reports the client contacts to the EFNEP is used to measure the success of the program. Clients are identified by local organizations, Area Agencies on Aging, and the Food Stamp Program and are reached through home visits, mail, and group meetings. Positive changes which occur as a result of the LINEP are altered eating habits, improved use of food stamps, and increased knowledge about nutrition. Although this method is twenty-six years old, expansion of the EFNEP to include the elderly and food stamp recipients is new. Some of the challenges met in running the program have included administrative as well as client resource issues. Hiring twenty-two new employees for the expansion recently was challenging. Clients' lack of knowledge and access to resources is another predicament the program faces.
