Primary Care Medical Services

Ongoing activities in this area include clinic activities at the Clinica Medica de Subirana, where medical attention is provided by nurse Maria de la Cruz Lopez Rivera, and at the government’s Centro de Salud where a social service-year physician is assigned.  The international organization Doctors Without Borders is financing, in addition to a community levy per family, refurbishing of the Centro de Salud.  Dr. Rodgers will be returning to Subirana in May, 2001 to evaluate priority needs, as well as assist with the vaccination campaign.  Lennox Foundation funds remaining in the project account will be used to provide a four-wheel-drive pickup in order to achieve high rates of vaccination for children and child-bearing-age women in remote villages.  Also, follow up on the patients who received physical therapy services will be attempted, and donated orthopedics equipment for patients identified during the last year will be taken to the village.

Health Care Training

Also during his May, 2001 visit, Dr. Rodgers will be meeting with the midwives who were participants in the training session held last April.   Information to be collected includes numbers of deliveries, maternal and child outcomes, types of complications, referrals made to the health center or regional hospital, and midwives perceptions of ongoing training needs.  Also to be addressed are issues of how to continue providing delivery kit materials (sterile gauze, scalpel blades, etc.).

Subirana Girls’ Club

Communication with the club leaders is ongoing, as is financial support for basic club expenses such as leader salaries and the emergency fund.  Future directions include encouragement for the club to continue attention to development of leadership/group skills, providing role modeling, and academic attainment, while maintaining its sports/physical fitness features.  A structure for ongoing data collection on current activities of  “graduates” of the club remains to be developed.

School Library Development

Several individuals continue to contribute Spanish-language books and/or funds for acquisition of library materials.   Assistance to community members interested in maintaining and continuing to develop the library will focus on organization and local fundraising.

COMVIDA At-Risk-Youth

Partners of the Americas Vermont—Honduras continues its support and involvement of this project through volunteer technical assistance and financial support for staff training activities.  Other financial support for this project comes from sources such as the government of Germany, as well from local Honduran groups such as the Chamber of Commerce.
