Vermont Honduras Partnership, Partners of the Americas

Joint Partners/Rotary Projects:

After Hurricane Mitch, Vermont/Honduras Partners of the Americas raised over $100,000.00 to assist with home construction for victims of the hurricane. In February, 1999, Vermont Partners approved $89,300.00 for housing projects identified by Honduran Partners. These funds were provided to build 119 housing units in Jutiapa, Choluteca, Santa Cruz, Lempira and Valle. These projects are in various stages of completion.

During the Fall of 1999, Vermont Partners joined with Vermont Rotary Clubs to build additional housing. This Partnership allowed for a 4 to 1 match thanks to the Matching Grant program administered by the Rotary Foundation. Unspent funds from the original $89,300.00 were added to the balance of our fundraising efforts resulting in $21,750.00 available for the Matching Grant program—ultimately resulting in $87,000.00 worth of funding for housing projects in Jutiapa, Choluteca, Marcala, and Tegucigalpita overseen by Honduran Rotary Clubs.

Thanks to Partners fundraising efforts and the Rotary Foundation’s Matching Grant program a total of $165,250.00 has been provided for home construction. 164 homes and the septic/electrical system for 16 others will be the final result.

Joint Partners/Rotary Projects:

Jutiapa, Honduras

The Danli Rotary Club has completed construction of thirty-eight 450 sq. ft. homes in the village of Jutiapa. All 38 village households had to participate in the construction of every home. The septic system, water lines, roads, and electricity were provided by the Government of Honduras. The well was dug by Action Against Hunger. A playground has also been constructed. $20,000-$30,000 is being sought to build a school for the villagers.

Tegucigalpita, Honduras

After Hurricane Mitch $1.5 million was donated to the Rotary Foundation for hurricane relief in Honduras and Guatemala. These funds were tapped for the construction of 16 homes in the remote village of Tegucigalpita near the Guatemalan border. The water system was provided through these funds. The project was sponsored by Usula Rotary Club. Partners and Rotary provided funding for the septic system and electrical hook-ups. This project is nearing completion.
