Health Projects

Alternativas y Oportunidades
Centered around a major open air market of Tegucigalpa, this project provies primary care attention to children, adolescents and mothers. Its principal emphasis is on training and counseling in job skills (micro-enterprise); infant, adolescent and reproductive health; and the formation of leaders based on peer-led activities which utilize positive role models.

ANEDH
This project is designed to compliment an on-going community development program sponsored by Canadians. It uses a major Tegucigalpa watershed as its geographic focus. Health professionals and lay community leaders will receive technical training in family planning, reproductive health, prenatal care, and infant survival. This project will also train 40 community leaders as facilitators of leadership and motivational courses. These courses are designed to foster action-oriented, problem-solving attitudes leading to greater community participation in improving local conditions.

Asociación de Mujeres para el Desarrollo - Marcala
This clinic-based project located in the remore department of Lempira is entirely run by women. They utilize the draw of the clinic to target at risk women and adolescents for training in the prevention of STDs, pre-natal care, rights of women and self esteem.

Medical School Exchange: University of Vermont, Medical School of Honduras, Marcala Primary Care Clinic
This program is currently in development. It will give UVM medical and health science students the opportunity to learn Spanish and obtain practical supervised experience. Hondurans will be given the same opportunities in Vermont. Vermont students will pay they own way; Hondurans are seeking funding from Rotary International.
