Belen Growers Project Plan

Proyecto Aldea Global (PAG) is a non-governmental organization that has worked with Honduran campesinos (small-scale farmers) in the remote hillside areas of central-northern Honduras called Belen. Chet Thomas is the director of the bilingual staff. PAG brings four to five United States volunteer work teams per year to Belen. Farmer to Farmer and PAG are involved in two main activities: apple production and food processing.
There are now two major apple production groups in the Apple Project and others on the way. In addition to growers in Belen supported by PAG we will begin working with growers in La Espersanza and their technical support program FHIA. The Pan American Agriculture school has also become involved in the project, adding an important institutional component.
At the suggestion of Jim Gallot and Nick Myers, we will begin looking at apples as a crop of national importance and therefore begin providing training and technical assistance on a national level. We will hold training workshops in La Esperanza in addition to Belen and invite apple growers from around the country to these workshops. Farm field visits will continue in Belen and begin in La Esperanza as well as other areas.
