Table II
Comparison of Different Age Groups in The
Population of Vermont, 1850-1960

This table, found in Chapter 1, is incorporated in a discussion of the basic demographics of Vermont from 1850 - 1960. By 1960, so many people in the 15-44 age bracket had left Vermont that the labor force was diminished and less productive. In the same decade, an influx in people over the age 65 increased the need for hospitals, convalescent homes, and medical care. Both the young and the older populations were increasing more than the rest of the population, requiring large expenditures on their behalf.
