Land Trusts and Conservation in Vermont
One of the fastest growing segments of the land conservation movement in the country is the land trust community. In fact, the past 10-15 years has seen a virtual mushrooming of land trusts throughout the United States. Vermont has been active since the inception of this movement, and today is home to more than 36 such organizations.
In the simplest terms, land trusts are local, state and regional non-profit organizations that protect land for a variety of purposes including, recreational value, scenic beauty, natural resource value and historical value. Different organizations utilize different forms of land protection including the acceptance of donations, the purchase of development rights, and outright fee acquisition.
This website is designed to inform the people of Vermont of some of the land conservation activity occurring in Vermont by the land trust community. This site is organized by town and provides acreage of land protected by the Vermont Land Trust, the Upper Valley Land Trust and The Vermont Housing and Conservation Board, the main land conservation funding organization in the state.
Take the time to see how much land has been protected by these three organizations in your town!!
