Census 2000
Vermont Worker Flow Data
The U.S. Census Bureau's Worker Flow Files contain data on where residents go to work
and where workers commute from. They were compiled from Census 2000 responses to the long-form (sample) questions on where
people worked.
The Worker Flow Data is available for download in the column on
the right. Archived 1990 data is also available. Before you download the files, we recommend that you read the following notes from the U.S. Census
Bureau:
U.S. Census Bureau Notes
Which file to choose: There are two different types of files to choose from, depending on the sort order and
format you may find most useful. The sort order refers to whether the county/town of residence or
the county/town of work is the main focus. If you are interested in the number of people who live in a county or town,
and want to know where they work, you should download one of the files sorted by the county/town of residence.
These files will show you all the work destinations for people who live in each county or town. On the other hand,
if you are interested in the people who work in a county or town, and want to know where they come from, download
one of the files sorted by place of work. These files will show you all the origins for people who work
in each county or town.
File formats: The files have been created in two formats: plain text and Excel spreadsheet format. The
Excel files and the uncompressed plain text files are directly viewable. The compressed plain text files are not immediately
viewable; they have been zipped for faster downloading. To download one of the files simply click on the underlined link
"Compressed Text" for the state and sort order you want. For information on using PKZIP/PKUNZIP, see the
Census PKZIP information page.
Documentation: The documentation for the files is available with the download links. To view the file,
just click on the underlined link, and the file will be displayed on the screen. You can then print the page
from your browser or save the file to your computer.
Special note: In reviewing the Worker Flow Files before release, some errors were discovered in a
number of the flows. These errors have been corrected. However, as a result of the corrections the data in these files may not
agree with data previously released in Summary File 3 (SF3) and related products. In particular, there may be differences in the
number of people working in the state, county, and/or town of residence between SF3 and similar estimates derived from these
files.
