BURLINGTON,VT, METROPOLITAN STATISTICAL AREA (circa 1993) (Definition)

Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA)
A geographic entity defined by the federal Office of Management and Budget for use by federal statistical agencies, based on the concept of a core area with a large population nucleus, plus adjacent communities having a high degree of economic and social integration with that core.

Until 2003, MSAs in New England were defined in terms of minor civil divisions, following rules concerning commuting and population density. The Burlington MSA contained the following towns and cities:
Within Chittenden County: Burlington, South Burlington, Shelburne, Charlotte, Hinesburg, St. George, Williston, Richmond, Jericho, Essex, Winooski, Colchester, and Milton.
Within Grand Isle County: South Hero and Grand Isle.
Within Franklin County: Georgia, Fairfax*, St. Albans City*, St. Albans Town*, and Swanton*.

*These towns were new to the Burlington MSA in 1993.  They were not included in Census 1990.
